As we all know, Minnesota is cold. Winter is brutal. And our homes are our safe place. It is so incredibly important that we keep our homes functioning properly. Here is a quick list of maintenance tips for this month. These are especially important with all of the snow we have gotten (14+" where I live!):
1 - Check your roof for ice dams. If you start to notice an ice dam, fix it immediately. You can do this by adding heating coils, or simply using a roof rake to remove snow from ice-damn prone areas.
2 - Change your furnace filter! This is an easy one to forget, but it is VERY important for your furnace's overall health and the quality of the warm air that is being pumped into your home.
3 - Going away? Consider leaving a faucet on a (very) slow drip to avoid frozen pipes. Or, have a family member or trusted friend check in on the house every couple of days.
4 - Remove your screens, if you haven't done so already! Snow and ice build up on window screens can stretch out the screen, and ultimately damage it.
These simple things take not more than a few minutes each (unless you have to rake 14 inches of snow off of your roof!), and can drastically improve the quality of living in your home.
